The Secret Garden
Perhaps Frances Hodgson Burnett's most famous work is The Secret Garden. Although it has long been regarded as a classic, scholars occasionally dismiss it lightly as "just a children's story." Nonetheless, children's books can serve as a master class in how to concisely convey a complex story. Classics because they are as deep as any adult fiction, but short enough to be consumed in a single afternoon.
The story of Mary Lennox, a spoiled young English girl brought up in India, is told in The Secret Garden. After her parents die, she is sent to live at Misselthwaite Manor, her mysterious uncle's estate in Yorkshire.
