The Nazi regime favored an ideology of physical, mental and moral purity. But as Norman Ohler reveals in this fascinating new story, the Third Reich was saturated with drugs. On the eve of World War II, Germany was a pharmaceutical powerhouse, and companies like Merck and Bayer produced cocaine, opiates and, most importantly, methamphetamine, which was used by everyone from factory workers to housewives who they passed by millions of German soldiers. In fact, soldiers regularly received rations of a form of crystal methamphetamine—the high energy and sense of invincibility associated with euphoria also helps explain some German military victories.
